Newly released today, Formex announced a new version of their Essence watch, the Formex Essence 18ct Oro Limited Edition. The Essence collection serves as their everyday wear watch, riding the line between sporty and dressy, especially in their all stainless steel models. They have previously released versions in both non-chronometer and chronometer specification, along with hybrid carbon-ceramic case versions. This new version combines the carbon and ceramic case construction along with a 18ct rose gold outer case. Formex uses a case suspension system, so the inner case (the part of the watch holding the dial, movement, etc) is spring loaded, allowing it to absorb shock and allow for some movement of the case while on the wrist.
To be specific, the watch features carbon-composite on the case back, dial and fine-adjustment clasp, a ceramic bezel and crown, 18ct rose gold for the outer case, and an 18ct rose gold accent on the clasp. Inside the watch is a Sellita SW200-1 that is COSC certified, featuring a date display, custom skeletonize rotor, and 38-hour power reserve. The watch is 43mm in diameter, 11mm thick, 49mm lug-to-lug, features 10 bar of water resistance (100 metres, 330 feet) and weighs in at 76 grams (case only). The watch comes with a leather, rubber, and nylon strap. The clasp features a micro-adjustment system and the straps have a quick release feature, allowing for strap changes without using a tool.
Overall, I think the watch is pretty damn cool looking. If you are someone who likes the look of other ceramic and gold watches, but looking for something on the more realistic end of the price spectrum, I think this is a good place to look. When the Essence was first released, given my preference for smaller watches, I wish they would offer a smaller diameter version. While I understand this is definitely a watch that benefits from a larger look, I think a 40mm version would be appropriate, and if the dimensions were maintained, a lug-to-lug in the 46-47mm range would definitely be more preferable for the smaller wrist enthusiasts out there. If you’re comfortable with larger sizes though, I would say the Formex Essence collection is something to look at.
